I am a UK based Director and Producer.
I founded the arts collective behind the bikeshed, which supports and promotes new work and artists, around the idea of theatre. I am an associate artist of saltpeter (www.saltpeterproductions.co.uk) and my work is supported by The Facility: research centre for creative practice.
My interest and research area is in post-colonial feminism. For the past two years I have been exploring women’s stories of migration and creating home and belonging.
This exploration has been developed through the language of the performance practices of Iban women, in particular the dancing and a style of performance poetry known as pantun. The Iban performance practice has migrated from the jungle, to urban areas, and globally, and the identity of that practice has developed as the locations have changed. Much like the women performing them. The Iban are an indigenous tribe of Borneo. I am half Iban. These journeys of identity through spaces and exploring the un-researched field of Iban women’s performance, has a particular interest to me. This is an investigation of personal importance, which has winder consequences in understanding the world we live in.
From the jungle is a full-length performance, which is born from this research.
From the jungle as a dance poem, where the rhythms of movement echo the rhythms of words.
