Who we are?

We are Second Side, a not-for-profit theatre company that exits to create innovative theatre experiences that educate, challenge and inspire young people in the East of England. We have been creating theatre, primarily aimed at attracting more fourteen to twenty five year olds to attend the theatre for over two years.

A professional director and producer work together to provide advice and guidance alongside the young people in the company, to enable them to take on the full ownership of the process of creating and managing the creation of the theatrical piece. Inspiring audiences to create their own work through role-modeling is crucial and central to the realisation of our work.

What is our current project?

Eight young people from the local community in Norwich are working hard to create their own theatre production of The Presnyakov Brothers contemporary play Terrorism.  They have given up their free time each week to rehearse under the guidance of a professional director.

The company have chosen this play to perform as it offers the audience an inter-connected, fast paced thriller, which attempts to make connections between the bad things that individual people do to each other in everyday life, under the shadow of the global threat of terror attacks. During our audience research focus groups, these were some of the themes that young people identified as of particular concern to them.

For a project such as this there are a variety of costs involved:

Rehearsal Room and Theatre Hire

We are lucky to have the support of The Garage (a performing arts training venue in Norwich), who have provided us with free rehearsal space, however we do need to pay for the hire of the theatre for the technical set up, technical and dress rehearsals and three day production run.

Production Costs

Our production involves the need for some basic set, costume and props to create the world that the play is set in. As our work aims to appeal to a younger audience we also use lighting, sound and video to create a theatrical experience that is energetic and exciting. Hiring in equipment is therefore important, and this of course, has a cost.

Marketing

This is crucial for us to help develop and sustain the theatrical audiences of tomorrow. It will cover a three month campaign that will give us exposure through website and social media, in local print publications, through poster / leaflet distribution and on the local radio.

The production will take place in April 2012 to an invited and paying audience, including family, friends, local schools and other youth groups. We hope that in sharing the play locally we will help raise aspirations and inspire others to create and perform their own work, and encourage a celebration of young people, their achievements and creativity.

This project is our next big step, so we need your help to realise its goals.
