Rachael's Café
How does Eric Wininger, a muscular, motorbike riding, Churchgoing 40 year old printer ink salesman from the Midwest with a wife and 3 children, become Rachael Jones, owner of the inimitable ‘inclusive’ Rachael's Cafe in Bloomington, Indiana?
The true story of one man’s unique and moving journey through gender, sexuality and family life told with wit, wisdom and a great cup of coffee.
‘I don’t want this play to be a tragedy…Life is not a tragedy. Life’s an amazing adventure.’ Rachael Jones
World Premiere – Edinburgh Festival
Laughing Horse @ Jekyll & Hyde (Venue 259)
4-29 August 2011 2pm
Why this play?
RACHAEL’s CAFÉ is first and foremost an intelligent, daring and entertaining piece of theatre, that brings to the theatregoing public a normally taboo subject in a refreshing and enlightening manner.
One thing that this play shows so clearly is that no matter how different some people may look or seem to us, our needs, our fears and our dreams are just the same.
With your support we hope to give the GLBT community an accessible platform to increase public awareness and understanding of Transgenders, gender dysphoria etc.
Who we are
Little Fly Theatre is a new company created solely to produce theatre that is a blend of verbatim and artistic license – true stories told simply, effectively and with style.
Our first venture is Rachael’s Café which will premiere at the Edinburgh Festival in August this year.
The play is the first play by writer and comedy promoter Lucy Danser.
We have a strong, motivated and committed team and are already very hard at work on set design, rehearsals and PR to ensure that our visit to the festival is well planned and well attended.
This is just the beginning for Rachael’s Café. We plan to follow our Edinburgh run with a UK/European tour and also take the show to the USA where Rachael is waiting for us.
Why do we need your help?
Whichever way we try to economise there’s no denying that EdFest is now expensive. All of our team are working for little or nothing but there’s still a lot to pay for – brochure fees, publicity material, props, set, technicians, travel, housing and rehearsal rooms. Our budget is almost £12,000 for absolutely everything and we’re hoping to raise at least £4000 of this from sponsorship – the rest we’ve scrimped and saved for.
If we're lucky enough to raise more money, we'd like to spend this on bringing Rachael to the UK to see ‘herself’ on stage and to do a number of Q&A sessions with our audiences and with LGBT groups in both Edinburgh and London.
A statement from Lucy Danser (writer)
Rachael’s Café was originally created as a short piece as part of my degree course at Indiana University and was staged there by award winning playwright and professor, Ken Weitzman.
On returning to the UK I completed my M.Dram at Kent but couldn’t get Rachael’s story out of my mind. As soon as I’d earned enough money I returned to Indiana, spent many hours interviewing Rachael and researching the issues facing transgender people before writing the full play.
I’m excited to be taking this, my first play, to the Festival and hope to meet up with our wonderful sponsors while I’m there.
A statement from Rachael
'Honey I am happy that you have written a play on my experiences...I also wanted to say that I think it is wonderful that you have the ability to create a piece of art based on someone's life experience, and I want to thank you for honoring me in this way; I am flattered. Kudos, again, and congratulations! I look forward to seeing the result of your labor."
