Primarily this application is to raise funds to purchase studio equipment for “Oil and Glass,” Art/Crafts Gallery and Glass Studio opening soon in Torry, Aberdeen. This will be an outlet for Contemporary Art, Craft and Jewellery. Workshops in Visual Arts and Glass will be provided for children, adults and community groups within the studio area. Artists from a variety of disciplines will be given the opportunity to spend time as Artists in Residence, to develop their own work, collaborate and also produce items for sale. This display will be complimented by work sourced from locally based Artists with a focus on work by graduates of Gray’s School of Art. Funding is also being sought to support the launch, initial exhibition costs and partial gallery fit out.
A successful application would mean that Oil and Glass is able to truly deliver;
• Provision of professional glass making equipment, for use by Resident Artists and available for hire.
• Valuable opportunities for both emerging and established artists
• The creation of a cultural hub where practising artists, writers, musicians and the wider community would be able to gather, make and enjoy.
• The provision of a contemporary, professional gallery space for both emerging and established artists.
• Facilities and equipment for Community Projects and group hire.
• A professionally presented and well publicised initial exhibition to launch the Gallery Space.
Shelagh Swanson, a 2004 painting graduate of Gray’s School of Art Aberdeen, is behind this new venture. Since graduation Shelagh has worked continuously in the fields of Community Arts and Galleries as well as continuing to practise as a Visual Artist. Her discovery of a passion for kilnformed glass in 2006 during a residency at North Lands Creative Glass ignited her desire to establish a studio where artists working in various disciplines could meet, collaborate and sell their work.
A winner of last year’s Retail Rocks Regeneration Project, Oil and Glass was awarded a Retail Space to trade in for free, for a year. As well as now having the the space, Shelagh has the knowledge, the enthusiasm, the dedication, the products and some basic equipment to open. She needs, however, additional funding to ensure that this exciting venture reaches its planned potential, ensuring the creation of a sustainable business for the future. Some start up funding was awarded through Retail Rocks, this has already been invested in Gallery Lighting, a Kiln, Glass and Art Materials and partial gallery fit-out.
This additional funding would cover
• Additional gallery fit out – to include floor covering, tables and display cabinets :£1000
• Launch of first exhibition costs - to include framing, exhibition set up, tools and publicity/marketing costs:£1500
• Studio Equipment- to include Sandblasting facilities, grinder, saw, slump molds, general studio supplies: £4500
• Multiple sets of tools for community/group use :£500
