The Gyrus Olympic Gymnastics Club is a Community Sports Club; we have been running for 44 years this year, the year of the 2012 London Olympics.
Unfortunately following the Oympics the club will have to close due to the closure of the current Leisure Centre, unless we can raise sufficient funds to enable us to move into a new unit.
There is currently no children's sports strategy for the local area, which means that the many hundreds of children that come throught the club each year will no longer have anywere to continue the sport they are so passionate about.
The club is run and coached solely by Volunteers who receive no remuneration for either their time or travelling expenses.
If you would like to know more , then please visit our website.
We do hope you will read more of our plight, the aim of the project and why this is so necessary in the following sections below.
Please also follow the updates on the 'Updates' tab; this includes links to recent Newsletters and achievements and awards that the volunteer workforce have worked so hard to achieve for the children in the community.
The project is to adapt an existing factory unit within Witham to facilitate the continuation of the gymnastics club as a not for profit organisation; providing valuable gymnastics activities to the whole community.
The club requires this as the existing facility is to be demolished by the Council; they have said they will not be providing a new sports facility for local clubs in regards to a gymnasium of sports hall facility; but they will support the club unconditionally with this project.
This project will not only allow the club to continue and build on the existing 44 years of success in the community; but will also enable the club to continue to support the British Gymnastics Membership and to ultimately build on the membership, thereby increasing future revenue for British Gymnastics.
The project is to fully furnish fit the factory unit as a permanent gymnastics training facility, with new updated equipment and the installation of an energy efficient heating system.
Gyrus Olympic Gymnastics Club currently operates out of the Bramston sports centre in Witham; which is has done for more than 40 years; it is a private club funded by the participants. The club is a not for profit organisation and everyone that works for the club is a volunteer, they claim neither fee nor any expenses in the running of the club. It’s probably one of the few remaining completely voluntary sports clubs in Witham.
However Bramston Sports Centre has now reached its end of life as the running costs are high and the facility is increasingly supported by the council tax payers; the local authority has now determined this is unsustainable.
The local authority has considered the future of sport and leisure provision within Witham and has decided that a new building would offer far lower running costs in the future and allow the opportunity to take a fresh look at how the sports centre is used by the local community.
However, it has been acknowledged that the new facility will be of insufficient capacity to cater for the needs of Witham and surrounding areas.
The consultation document has identified that although the population of Witham has more than doubled in the last 40 years, the new centre is being designed for a smaller capacity of users.
The new Council facility will not provide a gymnasium or sports hall, currently used by many activities, including the Gymnastics Club and the Trampoline Club; however our project aims to fill this gap for the local community.
The development is primarily about adapting an existing factory unit to a fully functioning gymnastics facility for the children. So what does this mean; well we have to install a viewing area to ensure the child friendly environment and to also ensure the complete openess of the facility for the parent to be able to watch their children train with the coaches. Then there is the heating system, with the money we trying to raise, we envisage installing an environmentally system. We looking to install a wind generator to facilitate this.
Additionally we are also looking to upgrade the equipment for the training facility; a costly exercise in itself. Unfortunately there are no grants available for projects of this nature even with the backing of the local authority in these times of austerity.
Below is a list of the equipment that we will be purchasing with the funds raised through this project. So everyone will be able to follow the milestones of the project funding and the equipment it will buy for the children the following is a list showing the total cost off each item required to ensure the safety of the children in the new facility:

This club is fantastic - they do so much for their community, I hope they get the support they need. It would be sad not to see them able to continue - what a sad legacy if a club like this can't get help in such an important year for sport.
A very worthy cause which I whole-heartily support; I just wish I could have given so much more. I do hope you reach the target and can continue in our local community.
You would think that every parent would support this
