What is MAYHEM IN THE MARKET?

MAYHEM IN THE MARKET is an ambitious and unique project created by ‘Question your Teaspoons’. The aims is to challenge preconceptions of the Victorian Market Hall in Goole, East Yorkshire, and to bring local people together to create a sense of pride and community.

MAYHEM IN THE MARKET takes the form of a series of site-based events, beginning in November 2011 with ‘Mulled Wine and Snowflakes' - a festive evening of arts and entertainment, to tie in with the town's Christmas lights switch-on event.

For this first event QyT commissioned 8 pieces of new work, including performances and installations by international performers from Italy, Korea and the UK. The artists presented work that engaged directly with the building; work that might usually be seen in theatres, comedy venues and galleries; work that playfully challenged and confounded expectations of what a market hall should be.

Traditionally, a market place was the lifeblood of a community; not just for trading but for entertainment, for gossip, for meeting friends. QyT aim to inject some of that energy and identity back into Goole Market – to re-establish the building as a place where anything can happen.

Right now, people only go into the market if there is something specific that they need in there. What this project is giving the market is an identity; reputation as a destination; an exciting place that people will want to visit year-round, regardless of whether they need to make a purchase or not. In the long run, we hope this will increase visitors to the market, and give a real boost to trade.

The film above has been created from footage of ‘Mulled Wine and Snowflakes’ which was shot by a local young person and aspiring filmmaker, and gives you a real taste of what the event was like.

The next event will take place on Saturday 18th February and will take St Valentine's Day as its theme. Artists for the next event include: LEVANTES DANCE THEATRE, CATHERINE HOFFMAN, MELISSA BLISS, R&A COLLABORATIONS, DRUNKEN CHORUS, TIM SMITH, GARY BRIDGENS

MAYHEM IN THE MARKET is an exciting way to bring contemporary arts into the public realm, offering opportunities for local people to see work that they might not normally have access to.

How can you help?

Question your Teaspoons have had a lot of support so far for MAYHEM IN THE MARKET. The project is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and is co-produced by Junction and Goole Town Council, with additional support from The Lowther Hotel.

However we still need a little extra funding to help make the next event totally spectacular. We really need your help to raise a final £650, which will go towards the cost of publicity, licensing and other overheads.

We've got some exciting rewards on offer from some of our wonderful MAYHEM artists. Take a look at the rewards down the right hand side of this page and see what tickles your fancy...

Every donation, whether £1 or £100, will be a massive help, and we will be hugely grateful. THANK YOU!!!

The owner of this project has not made any updates yet.
