Hadijatou J'accuse

"Hadijatou, J'accuse" is a documentary about Hadijatou Mani, the first woman to have sued her government for being a slave… and the first former slave to have won her case against the state of Niger! This landmark decision brings hope that ending slavery in the XXI century is becoming possible. But Hadijatou now has a new battle to fight: recovering her kids from her old master. Directed by Lala Gomà and Rosa Cornet, "Hadijatou, J'accuse" tells the real story of slavery in the XXI century' Africa and its mothers fighting for their children's freedom.

Hadijatou Mani

Hadijatou Mani is a 28 year old Nigerian woman who has been a slave since the age of 12. Encouraged and aided by the NGO Anti-Slavery International and its affiliate in Niger, Trimidia, she is the first ex-slave to take her government to court and the first one to win.
Thanks to her courage, the Niger state has really begun to act against slave trade. Now she wants to recover her kids from her old master, and we want to be there to shoot it all.

The story

On October 27th, 2008, for the first time, a Superior Court, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the government of Niger for not having defend a citizen against slavery. Hadijatou was pioneer in denouncing her government for slavery and she obtained a favorable ruling, which was a breakthrough in the defense of human rights.

It's time to shoot the happy ending

The team made a first trip to Niger in 2009. The main intention was to meet Hadijatou and her incredible story, told by herself. On that first shooting, we met all characters linked to the story and, thanks to the collaboration of a local reporter, we got recordings of several Hadijatou’s lawsuits, and we also had the chance to interview Hadijatou’s former master, who will be the first slave master to give his point of view in front of a camera.
Now is time to go to Niger again, and to attend the legal resolution of Hadijatou’s appeal, which demands to recover her two kids back. We must tell the end of her fight and present to the whole world the big work Hadijatou is doing for all women who are still in slavery. And we need you to make it possible: Pledge now!

Why chosing Hadijatou's story?

Despite the Slavery Convention (which outlaws slavery in 1926) and being 'officially banned' in almost every country, slavery still exists in large scale, both in traditional forms and 'new slavery'. According to a study published in 2000, could be about 27 million slaves worldwide. In the study published by the International Labour Organization (ILO), in 2012 is estimated at about 20.9 million, so for every 1000 people worldwide, 3 are victims of forced labor. Only in Níger, the second poorest country worldwide, at least 43,000 people are in slavery nowadays.
Our deep curiosity and desire to know Niger reality, to know Hadijatou and other people who achieve apparently impossible goals has led us to work on this story.

How you can help

The total budget for Hadijatou J'accuse is about 140.000€, but we "only" need 50.000€ to the final efford: About 25.000€ for the shooting expenses: travelling visas, camera and sound equipment rental, plane tickets, hotels, meals, memory cards, medical and travel insurances, hiring a local translator, transportation rental, etc. including Sponsume and Paypal's fees (That's what we are crowdfundind here!).

We'll gather in our own website the amount we can't raise here at Sponsume, consisting in postproduction costs like editing, editing and audio postproduction rooms rental, color grading, mastering for cinema and TV, licensing with Dolby, etc. and the expenses to prepare this campaign as web hosting, design and trailers' editing, also including Paypal's fees.

Pledge right now and be part of Hadijatou's story!

What will we do if we exceed the goal

If we overcome the funding goal of 50000€, we will donate 1€ in every 10€ we raise directly to the NGOs that have helped Hadijatou and keep helping Niger in ending with slavery: Anti-Slavery International, Trimidia and Doctors Without Borders.

The rest of the over-funded money will be expended in bringing the documentary to TVs and theaters worldwide, and organizing premieres in more cities internationally so we can present the documentary with experts on contemporary slavery.
