The Asabaako Music Festival was launched on Busua Beach in Ghana, in March 2011. British and Ghanaian orgnisers, Beating Tracks, are now planning towards the next edition in December. Your contribution will go a long way to establishing a unique and positive new festival in Ghana, and here are 5 reasons why...
Support Underground Ghanaian and Afrian Music
One of the most important elements of Asabaako is to promote and provide a platform for unsigned, under-supported, underground artists in Ghana, those who do not have the resources to make it in the unstructured Ghanaian music industry. In years to come the festival will build a development programme and workshops offering even more to local artists, while continuing to bring international musicians and DJs to add something different to the mix.
Changing Perception
This festival provides a genuine opportunity to change the world’s perception of Ghana and Africa. It is a positive, non-patronising effort to show the world that Ghana is a safe, politically stable, emerging economy. It will work to address issues within the local community, but will always ensure this not to be the focus and be portrayed without being patronising or stereotypical.
The Team
Asabaako has been developed initially by a British Ghanaian team, who have now spent over two years in Ghana refining the concept. The team now consists of a strong mix of Ghanaians, Diasporans, and foreigners who bring their various experiences and knowledge and who fully respect the culture of the people in which the festival takes place.
Inclusive for All
An international festival in a location where poverty clearly still exists holds a number of challenges to ensure the safety and enjoyment of its visitors alongside the inclusion of its hosts. Asabaako organisers have studied similar events around the world and are developing a model which offers something for everyone, with a combination of free and paid-for entertainment.
Make the Dream a Reality
Asabaako is a concept that began over a quiet drink between a couple of friends in a London pub almost three years ago, and now genuinely stands on the brink of establishing itself on the international festival calendar. With research and development fully self-funded by organisers, your contribution will play a huge part in realising a dream that has now spread and captured the imagination of people around Ghana and around the world.
