CEO/PRODUCER – GREENWAY ENTERTAINMENT
STEVEN M. SMITH
At sixteen he made his first student feature and then turned his hand to writing for a living, with several optioned scripts through his agent in Hollywood. In his early career he was a production assistant on many films including “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. After a few years he penned several screenplays including an un-produced episode of the much loved television series Lovejoy. In 2005 Steven M. Smith set about making his own films and wrote, produced and directed TIME OF HER LIFE. It won an award at the premiere screening for “Outstanding achievement in film making”. Source – Joseph Award 2005. STEVEN M. SMITH and his company have been nominated for the YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR 2007 and 2008. Steven made it to the finals and was a runner-up on both occasions. In 2009 Steven completed a music video called “Like This”, several shorts horror films, TV demos and worked with Bruce Payne (Passenger 57) on DANCE STAR a short just released on DVD in USA. Steven also recently completed HAUNTED a low-budget horror feature film that will be released in 2012 worldwide.
DANIEL JOHNSON – WRITER, DIRECTOR – PARALYSIS
London-based screenwriter and director Daniel Johnson, 26, is in pre-production on his debut feature film 'Side By Side', a poignant story about the complexities of love and relationships, in the midst of tragic circumstances. 'Side By Side' is the story of a struggling musician, Paul, who is at a crossroads in his life. His girlfriend Lisa, who he was on the verge of leaving, is suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer.
The film is a low-budget film in the vein of "Clerks" and "The Puffy Chair", films which inspire Daniel. "I've never had money. My films have always been about me filming with no money and turning up in locations with no permissions; but these problems breed creativity, I prefer working this way". Daniel started making short films in his teenage years, despite having poor equipment and no formal training. "My training has been practice. I am always writing, or filming, or reading, or watching films.” It is this work ethic which has led to the writer/director making his first feature film at only 26.
Having made two short films in New York, "Alone" and "Crazy Love", the latter was in the "Queens International Film Festival 2009". His latest short film, a no-budget comedy, "Broken Date", won the runners up prize at the "Bodega Bay International Short Film Festival" in Los Angeles in June 2011. "I wasn't able to be there, but afterwards I got a lot of really nice emails from people who said they loved the movie, it's really confidence inspiring, when people not only like what you do, but are moved to contact you." Dan has also enter films into the Cannes Film festival and Chelmer film festival with positive response.
It might seem strange that a director who has mostly produced comedic short films is making his feature film debut about much heavier topics, but it’s not how he sees it. "There is a lot of comedy in it. When tough things happen, life doesn't stop, it just takes on a different dynamic. The film is very comedic in parts, and sometimes very serious." On whether the film is autobiographical, Daniel pushes the charge aside. "It is more of a 'what if' scenario, what if my artistic ambitions were thwarted because life threw me a giant obstacle. And that's what I did with these characters; put big blocks in front of these characters and who they thought they were. It's a film where all of their perceptions of themselves are challenged."
